What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape, resize, or correct structural issues of the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons (to improve appearance) or functional purposes (to correct breathing problems due to a deviated septum or other structural issues). The procedure is highly individualized and tailored to each patient’s facial features, goals, and nasal anatomy.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take between 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity. The surgeon may use either an open technique (with a small incision across the columella between the nostrils) or a closed technique (with incisions hidden inside the nostrils). During the procedure, cartilage, bone, and soft tissue may be reshaped, removed, or added to achieve the desired look or improve function. For functional issues, the septum may be straightened, and internal structures adjusted to improve airflow. Once the reshaping is complete, the incisions are closed and a splint is placed on the nose to support healing.

Rhinoplasty Recovery & Results

Initial results from rhinoplasty become visible once the swelling begins to subside, usually within a few weeks, but the final shape of the nose can take up to a year to fully refine. Most patients experience swelling, bruising, and nasal congestion in the first few days after surgery, with noticeable bruising around the eyes that typically fades within 10 to 14 days. The nasal splint is usually removed within a week. Most people return to non-strenuous activities within 1 to 2 weeks, but more intense physical activity should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks. While the nose may appear slightly swollen for months, the gradual changes over time lead to a more defined and natural-looking result.
